What is Search Engine

How Does the Search Engine Work

A search engine is a special type of computer software that finds the query searched by any user from the World Wide Web (www) and shows it to the user on the Search Engine Result Page (SERP).

Any user who queries on the Internet is called Keyword. The search engine matches that keyword and searches all the websites from the internet repository and shows it on the SERP in front of the user.

All search engines show the best result to the user based on their algorithm. So that the user can get a satisfactory answer to his query, and his trust in the search engine remains. Like Google which is a very popular search engine.

How Does Search Engine Work

How Does the Search Engine Work

Any search engine has its own algorithm, it is able to give accurate information to the user only on the basis of its algorithm. The working system of the search engine is very complex, it is not so easy for the common user to understand, but there are some steps to work for all search engines that we are going to tell you.

There are mainly 4 steps to the work of search engines.

  • Discovery
  • Crawling
  • Indexing
  • Ranking

1 . Discovery

When website owners publish a new page in their website, search engine robots (also called crawlers, spiders or bots) first find that page.

Website owners submit their website to the webmaster tool of the search engine so that search engine bots easily find the website on the Internet. Such as Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools.

2 . Crawling

The second step is crawling. Websites or webpages that search engine crawlers find and then crawl them. Crawl means crawl.

When search engine crawlers (also called bots, spiders) crawl any website or webpage, they try to understand that webpage what topic is talked about in this webpage. Search engine crawlers understand a webpage based on the following few things.

  • Keywords used in webpages.
  • Webpage URL, description, title.

3 . Indexing

The third step comes to Indexing. Indexing means to list. Search engine crawlers do indexing of the website after crawling. After understanding all the websites, crawlers make a list of websites. And store them in your main server.

All websites in the main server are listed category wise. Meaning the website of news is in the category of news, the website of health is in the category of health, similarly Sports, Tech all websites are listed category wise.

For the information of a blogger, let me tell you that we cannot directly ask the search engine to put our website in this category. As your website is related to health, then you cannot directly say that keep our website in the health category.

The search engine gives it the same category as it understands a website according to its algorithm. Yes, we can definitely instruct the search engine (using Meta Tag) which topic our website is based on.

That's why you must have heard most of the time that the Single Niche website ranks quickly, because the Single Niche website easily gets the category. And in the Multi Niche website, the search engine bots do not understand which category to put this website in, so it takes more time to rank the Multi Niche website.

For more information, you can read the Single Niche vs Multi Niche article of our blog.

4 . Ranking

The last step in the working system of search engines comes to Ranking. After doing so much, now the search engine shows the best result according to any user's query on the SERP. The website that has the best information is placed on the top by search engines and this sequence goes on in the same way.

This was the working system of the search engine, although it is very complex, but I have told you in the easiest words, so that you can understand how the search engine works.

Types of Search Engine

There are mainly five types of search engines.

1. Crawl Based Search Engine

These types of search engines only run with the help of crawlers, spiders or bots. All these are computer programs. There are no human beings in them. Such as   Ask.Com

2. Search engines with instruction base

This type of search engine is guided by a team of individuals. Only a few selected websites are shown in them. Such as – dmoz.org

3. Hybrid Search Engine

Search engines that are also crawler-based and are also guided by humans are called hybrid search engines. Such as – Google, Yahoo, Bing.

4. Meta Search Engine

Those search engines which do not have data themselves, but when some search is done in them, they take data from search engines like Google, Yahoo and show it to their users, they are called Meta Search Engine. Like – DuckDuckGo.

5. Special types of search engines

Search engines that are made for a particular type of topic or are made for a particular type of area, are called special types of search engines. E.g. – Justdial, Shopping.yahoo.com.

The work of search engines

  • Where the Internet is a vast repository of information, it immediately brings us information we like or search for.
  • Helps us to access the information of our choice quickly, which saves our time and reduces effort.
  • Search engines store all website information on the Internet, so that the user can search any type of information in the search engine.
